Robert Lane is a Licensed Attorney in the State of North Carolina. Currently, Mr. Lane is an Assistant County Attorney (Police Attorney) for the Wake County Sheriff’s Office (“WCSO”) located in Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina.
Wake County is home to 1.2 million Wake County Residents served by the WCSO. Mr. Lane provides a wide range of legal counsel and advice to the Sheriff and Sheriff’s Office employees on a variety of legal matters including, but not limited to civil law, administrative law, privacy law, labor/employment law, and criminal law. Mr. Lane conducts civil defense litigation and serves as a liaison to outside-special counsel and legal representatives for local law enforcement agencies. Mr. Lane also plays an integral role in litigation cost management for WCSO.
Prior to his experience at the Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Lane served as an Associate Attorney at The Charleston Group, a high-powered law firm located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. At the Charleston Group, Mr. Lane primarily practiced Business Law, Administrative Law, and Health Care Law. Mr. Lane advised directors, CEOs, licensed medical facilities, licensed medical providers, in-house counsel, and many more through legal guidance, research, and strategic planning. Mr. Lane guides each of his clients with proactive legal counsel through litigation and, ultimately, to resolution.

Mr. Lane has conducted litigation in the district and superior courts of North Carolina, the Eastern District of North Carolina, the Office of Administrative Hearings, the North Carolina Industrial Commission, and more. Mr. Lane emphasizes quality, cost-effective representation.
Mr. Lane has provided legal advice regarding the structure, management, and liabilities associated with business specific forms of entities. Mr. Lane has also provided legal advice regarding corporate governance.
Mr. Lane has served as counsel to both employers and employees in Equal Employment Discrimination, Worker’s Compensation, Unemployment Insurance, and other human resources matters.
Many of the actions taken by or against the state regarding licensure are governed by Chapter 150B of the North Carolina General Statutes and are heard by the Officer of Administrative Hearing before Administrative Judges. Mr. Lane has represented the state, licensed medical providers, licensed funeral homes, licensed real estate agents, and more.
Mr. Lane has represented a hospital, a LME-MCO, and numerous licensed professions prosecuting involuntary commitments, providing legal advice regarding patient privacy under HIPAA and SAMHSA, and litigating before the Office of Administrative Hearings regarding termination of provider contracts and Medicaid recoupments up to over $1.3 million.
Mr. Lane has litigated matters as designated mandatory complex business cases before the North Carolina Business Court regarding, inter alia, breach of confidentially, misappropriation of trade secrets, trademark violation, and more. Mr. Lane is currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science Engineering with the intent to expand into patent litigation as our society becomes progressively software and data dependent.
Mr. Lane has represented several government/public entities such as an LME-MCO, law enforcement agency, public hospital, housing authorities, and more. With such, Mr. Lane is acclimated to public offices and offices of public trust.
Mr. Lane currently serves as a police/sheriff’s attorney providing advice on law enforcement functions and special operations. Mr. Lane is also a certified Basic Law Enforcement Training Instructor and Detention Officer Certification Course Instructor with Sheriff’s Training and Standards and Criminal Justice Training and Standards.
